Dr. Sonia Shiri
CASA Stateside Director
Dr. Sonia Shiri is the Stateside Director of the Center for Arabic Study Abroad. Dr. Shiri is also Associate Professor, Middle East Language Programs Coordinator, Director/PI of Project GO and Project GO-Advanced, and Director of the Arabic Flagship Program at the University of Arizona. Prior to joining the School of Middle Eastern & North African Studies (MENAS) at UA, Dr. Shiri coordinated the Arabic Program at the University of California, Berkeley, taught Arabic at Oxford University, and held a Research Fellowship at the Center for Women and Gender at Stanford University. She also acted as Senior Academic Director of the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) from 2009-2012 and as the Academic and Outreach Coordinator for the Berkeley Language Center from 2002-2005. Dr. Shiri received UC Berkeley’s Faculty Award for Outstanding Mentorship of Graduate Student Instructors in 2007 and CALICO’s Access to Language Education Award in 2008. She holds a PhD and MSc from Edinburgh University (UK) and a BA from the University of Tunis (Tunisia).
